Abstract

This article examines the influence of the Enlightenment and military thought on the independence process of Hispanic America, with a particular focus on Simón Bolívar's vision and leadership. Drawing parallels with European contexts, especially the French Revolution, the text explores how the concept of the nation evolved from Enlightenment ideals, transitioning from traditional loyalty to monarchies to the emergence of popular sovereignty. Bolívar's leadership is analyzed within this context, emphasizing how his military campaigns in battles such as Boyacá, Carabobo, and Ayacucho were driven by nationalist ideals and the desire for a unified Hispanic America. The text succinctly presents how Bolívar sought to implement Enlightenment-inspired ideas under the banner of a "liberator," yet faced resistance from local elites and regional interests that fragmented his efforts. The article argues that the independence movements in Hispanic America express not only political, cultural, and economic transformations but also endeavors of a military nature. Finally, the study aims to provide a reflection on Bolívar's legacy and figure, as well as the multifaceted nature of the independence processes in Hispanic America, which combined philosophical principles with the harsh realities of war.
