TERAPIA FOTODINÂMICA COMO COADJUVANTE AO TRATAMENTO PERIODONTAL NÃO-CIRÚRGICO / PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY AS ADJUVANT TO NON-SURGICAL PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Resumo

Introdução: O padrão ouro do tratamento periodontal é a raspagem e alisamento radicular. Contudo, nas áreas de difícil instrumentação pode não se obter êxito e alternativas complementares são necessárias para eliminar patógenos desses locais como a laser terapia. Objetivo: A presente revisão da literatura teve o propósito de relatar informações sobre aplicabilidade, eficiência e uso da Terapia Fotodinâmica - TFD, (Photodynamic Therapy - PDT) como coadjuvante na terapia periodontal. Métodos: Foram consultadas as bases de dados Pubmed, Lilacs e Scielo, utilizando-se as palavras-chave Periodontitis, Photodynamic, Therapy e Dentistry. Foram obtidos 46 artigos que melhor expressavam a relação do tratamento periodontal e TFD. Resultados: A Terapia Fotodinâmica é vista como opção benéfica porque promove a redução bacteriana sem efeitos colaterais, sendo menos traumática ao paciente por não haver necessidade de anestesia. A redução de patógenos periodontais e a busca por métodos que não promovam resistência bacteriana são os motivos primordiais para a inclusão da Terapia Fotodinâmica no tratamento periodontal não cirúrgico. Conclusão: O uso da Terapia Fotodinâmica deve estar associado à raspagem e alisamento radicular durante o tratamento periodontal.

Abstract
Introduction: The gold standard in periodontal treatment is scaling and root planning. However, on the teeth regions of difficult instrumentation we require other alternatives such as laser therapy to eliminate pathogens. Objective: The aim of this literature review was to report information about the clinical effect, efficacy and the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunctive to periodontal therapy. Methods: Pubmed, Lilacs and Scielowere the databases used for this research. We used the following keywords: periodontitis, photodynamic therapy and dentistry. 46 papers were evaluated concerning the better approach between the relationship of periodontal treatment and PDT. Results: PDT is seen as a beneficial therapy since it can lead to bacterial reduction without side effects. Moreover, it is less traumatic to the patient because there is no need for anesthesia. The reduction of periodontal pathogens and the search for methods that do not promote bacterial resistance are the main reasons for the inclusion of PDT on non surgical periodontal therapy. Conclusion: The use of PDT must be associated to scaling and root planning on periodontal treatment.
