HEART OF DARKNESS, APOCALYPSE NOW, AND THE QUESTION OF THE LIVING METAPHOR

This article presents a comparative and essayistic analysis, through Paul Ricoeur's theory of metaphor, of the novel Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad, 1899) and its most famous adaptation, the film Apocalypse Now Final Cut (Francis Ford Coppola, 2019). The reflections of the work focus on the strategies of the authors involved to manage the metaphorical referentiality in their respective works. The article complements the theory of metaphor with brief allusions about the relations of the technical image with conceptual thought and with historical essays on the colonization of the Congo. Finally, the article traces the appearance of the character Kurtz in the respective works as being corresponding to the metaphorical strategies of the works.
