Studies oriented to the use of public resources, investments and maintenance of equipment aimed
at social well-being are of great relevance for urban regions lacking the support of the public power, due to the numerous socio-environmental problems triggered by the lack of basic infrastructure. Research of this nature can be successful from the application of geoprocessing techniques. Thus, the objective is to elaborate the Housing Adequacy Index (HAI), through the analysis of variables of the sanitary and environmental scope for the Metropolitan Region of Sorocaba (RMS), using the Geographic Information System in conjunction with the Analysis Process Hierarchy (AHP). Thus, through the elaboration of the AHI, it was found the occurrence of areas with very high suitability (25.12%), high (52.77%) and low (0.71%) in the RMS. In addition, it was found that the urban area has better conditions of access to basic infrastructure when compared to rural areas, interfering with the quality of life of this population. Finally, the research was able to demonstrate that the methodology applied proved to be satisfactory to represent the socio-environmental reality of the RMS.
