This article presents a reading of the novel Quincas Borba by Machado de Assis, based on an analytical proposal of a structuralist nature supported by three axes – 1) Ritual of passage, 2) The grand monde and 3) March to the moon – which allow us to reflect about the social trajectory of one of the central characters of the novel, Rubião, who, upon receiving an inheritance, becomes a nouveau riche, however, because he does not understand the rules of the social system in which he will be inserted, he experiences a process of failure social, affective and personal. The methodological perspective took place through a critical approach in which the intrinsic elements of the work were prioritized, placing elements of the narrative structure at the center of the debate. This primacy resulted in an appreciation of the elements that form the battlefield and the elements of tension that lead to the downfall of the character Rubião.
