The major urban environmental problems and destruction of natural resources continue to be a challenge in the face of current public policies. There needs to be good institutional performance so that the results achieved in public policies are much more positive in relation to what was effectively predicted. In this context, the general objective of the study is to analyze the economic frontier of State of Pará, based on the environmental management mechanisms to combat deforestation available. To achieve this, it was necessary to discuss the dynamics of the frontier in the Amazon; demonstrate the public policy of green municipalities and the “Amazônia Agora” State Plan; as well as analyzing the environmental management mechanisms applied to combat deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. From a methodological point of view, the article used qualitative-exploratory research techniques. The main conclusion is that public policies are important institutional instruments aimed at the border, but they do not, in fact, contribute to strengthening environmental management, especially in the State of Pará.
