VIEIRA E O ATLÂNTICO EQUATORIAL: o Maranhão na Guerra Luso-Castelhana (1640-1668)

Resumo

Sabemos que a historiografia tem insistido, por vezes, na representação de um Vieira multifacetado, dissociando e confrontando seus aspectos político, religioso, profético e, até mesmo, diplomático. Desse modo, a missão no Maranhão (1653-1661) é mais um episódio da árdua jornada do jesuíta em contribuir para a transcendentalidade do reino luso pós Restauração Portuguesa. Era notória, para Vieira, a importância desta área de fronteira na conjuntura política portuguesa, ao término da União Ibérica, que via nesse imenso território vantagens na guerra luso-castelhana, mas, também, a concretização de um projeto universal pensado anos antes na inacabada obra História do Futuro. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar os escritos do padre Antônio Vieira que apontam essas singularidades e como elas contribuíram para moldar seu pensamento político-profético.

VIEIRA AND THE EQUATORIAL ATLANTIC: Maranhão in the LusoCastelhana War (1640-1668)

We know that historiography has insisted, at times, on the representation of a multifaceted Vieira, dissociating and confronting his political, religious, prophetic and even diplomatic aspects. Thus, the mission in Maranhão (1653-1661) is yet another episode of the Jesuit’s arduous journey in contributing to the transcendentality of the Portuguese kingdom after the Portuguese Restoration. It was well known, for Vieira, the importance of this frontier area in the Portuguese political context at the end of the Iberian Union, which saw in this immense territory advantages in the Portuguese-Castilian war, but also, the realization of a universal project thought years before in the unfi nished work História do Futuro. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze the writings of Father Antônio Vieira that point out these singularities and how they contributed to shape his political-prophetic thin.
