Abstract

Considerations on informal care provided to elderly people with dependencies in home care performed by women. Anchored in theoretical and documentary contributions, it discusses the aging population in the world and the importance of informal
care with the objective of apprehending the elements that contribute to ratify the determination of the female gender for the exercise of caregiver in Brazil and, examples of public policies aimed at informal caregivers, such as those in Portugal. It is concluded that, not by chance, the female audience stands out there, given their close relationship with the social roles that attribute to women the responsibility for taking care of the home and its members. Essential care for human existence, compounded by the rapid demographic evolution, variation of dependency demanded by old people, but which remains ignored and undervalued in most parts of the world.
