Abstract

The article analyzes processes of installation and expansion of thermoelectric plants in Maranhão and the effects on traditional communities. The cases of the Ute Porto do Itaqui and Geramar III, in São Luís, and the UTEs of Parnaíba Complex in Santo Antônio dos Lopes are emphasized. Important issues gain centrality: a) many complaints are presented about the fragility of licensing processes involving the installation and operation of undertakings and systems for controlling the emission of pollutants; b) the installation of these enterprises has affected traditional peoples and communities that have their ways of life threatened and subjected to situations of territorial, environmental and food insecurity. The discussions result from work carried out by the Group of Development, Modernity and Environment Studies, which involved documentary analysis, interviews and bibliographic review.
