Abstract

The article analyzes aspects of regional differentiation in the Amazon biome in relation to the pressure, which occurred in the last decade of the last century and in the first decade of this century, for the expansion of the supply of commodities in order to meet the global demand, which is carried out through of the investigation of the regions of Carajás and Marajó which, among those of the Brazilian fraction of the biome, presented very different answers. To do so, resorted to economic analyzes that were articulated to the process of conformation of them as distinct spatial units. This made it possible to interpret the fundamentals of the differences between these economies; to point out that such differences go back to adjustments that mediated their insertion into the global space; and explain how differences affect the division of the social product and the perspectives of regional development.
