Abstract

The states of Piauí and Maranhão maintain procedures for exempting the environmental licensing of economic activities specified in state regulations. This article proposes to observe, through a comparative analysis of the economic typologies exempted from environmental licensing, how the two states in the mid-north of Brazil have normatively designed the public policy of environmental control of economic activities to balance the relationship: environmental protection and socioeconomic development. The data were obtained through a survey and bibliographic and documental analysis,
especially with the normative acts of the respective states. The results indicate that Maranhão dispenses with a smaller number of economic activities in relation to Piauí and that both states dispense with environmental licensing for some typologies linked to local geoeconomic potential.
