Abstract

This article aims to document and discuss the history of ASMARC/MG (Association of Selectors of Recyclable Materials of Caratinga), from its foundation to the present. To this end, it describes the initial mobilizations, the phases of development, institutional partnerships and the relationship with the local public administration over time. It also reports the organizational and institutional development of the studied enterprise. The article is based on the methodology of action research and participant observation. In addition, it carries out a descriptive documentary survey and problematizes the situation of the
municipality of Caratinga/MG in relation to post-consumer solid waste and its destination, as well as the public policies of the State in this regard. In the end, it historicizes the insertion, the collective organization and the importance of the role played
by the recyclable material pickers in this territory from a case study that helps the understanding and comparison with other Brazilian experiences.
