Abstract

This article presents a critique of Brazil's interpretation of the existence of “bondage capitalism”. In general terms, these approaches transform apparent elements of the historical process into essence. That is, by idealizing unique and universal ways of capitalist, abstract liberal cosmopolitanism as colonial and slave bases as ways of development of peripheral monopoly capitalism and, consequently, of the brutal development of income, property and political power. In addition to presenting the critique, we also propose, based on the reinterpretation of classics of Brazilian Marxist social thought, proposals for alternative approaches to the so-called “compadrio” practices in Brazilian historical development.
