Abstract

This article aims to understand the perception of leaders/representatives of social groups from Maricá-RJ about the risks associated with oil exploration in this municipality and their relationship with the current use of financial compensation. Based on the concept referring to the risk society and relying on data collected in 2021 from a field survey carried out in Maricá with government agents and a representative of the region's fishermen's colony, the results, in addition to highlighting the character multiple referring to the perceptions of risks existing in this location, point out that specific definitions of risk are important in determining how the resources arising from financial compensation are allocated in the municipality. The article contributes to fomenting the discussion about the role of compensations in oil exploration scenarios.
