Abstract

The disappearance of the complex of categories from classical antiquity is discussed. Some examples of this complex are: leisure, free time, study, peace of the soul, examination of conscience, self-care, aesthetics of existence, spiritual exercise, self-techniques, self-formation. The aim is to problematize the civilizing forms of expropriation of free time and denial of study to those sentenced to forced work. To achieve this, a bibliographical study was carried out using the immanent study method. The results are presented in two sections, in which the debate is held, respectively, on the appropriation of oneself in the arts of living through free time or leisure, and the expropriation of free time and denial of study in the world of professions in the geography of capital. It is observed that, given the scarcity of satisfactory theoretical-political alternatives, critical studies return to classical philosophy.
