Abstract

The article offers contributions to the development of initiatives committed to recovering the memory and historical reconstruction of Social Work in Brazil, taking as a reference projects and programs developed in university institutions in the Northeast of the country, particularly in the states of Pernambuco, Piauí and Maranhão. It characterizes the actions to rescue professional memory, the collection associated with this memory and its varied sources, in addition to making notes for the deepening of the historical reconstruction of the social meaning of the profession. It presents a review of the history of the profession in Piauí and the trajectory of the course at UFPI, reporting the experience of the Social Work Memory Extension
Program in Piauí. Finally, it discusses the origin of academic-professional training in Social Work in Maranhão and the involvement of the Catholic Church in the creation of the Maranhense School in 1953.
