Abstract

The article made considerations about the institutional and social role of the State, from the process of institutionalization and state accountability for social protection. Understanding that there is no single model of social protection, it analyzed the
perspectives and challenges in the Brazilian State in the face of the defunding caused by neoliberalism and intensified in recent years, added to fascism, conservatism and racism in federal management, reducing budgets, contributing to precariousness of social protection services. An approach was sought in relation to the first months of the third Lula Government, specifically in Social Assistance policy. The reflections were based on critical social theory, through literature review, providing dialogues and reflections between the authors, about the current situation and the challenges for Brazilian social protection.
