Disagreement and rupture: the crisis of liberal democracy and the rise of the extreme right in the 21 st century

The rise of extremism around the world is challenging the conceptions and practices of liberal democracy. Different interpretations of this multifaceted phenomenon tend to recognize it in its externality and its counterpoint to the dominant political forms. On the contrary, we propose the hypothesis that these are endogenous manifestations of the current democratic political systems, a historical expression of the convergence between the crisis of the elitist-pluralist model of democracy and the maturing of neoliberal conservatism, an offshoot of the New Right adjusted to the impositions of monopoly capitalism. The emergence of the popular masses on the streets exposes legitimate democratic demands, but which, when captured by forces of the extreme right, become worrying threats to acquired rights and the achievements of social minorities.
