Between mirrors: otherness and (re)construction of the “self” in Look at the lilies of the field, by Erico Veríssimo

Abstract

The reification of the human, the subject, subjectivity, the self and discourse occupy significant spaces in our contemporary world. From this perspective, this study aims to establish the relations of alterity and (re)construction of the self present in the work Olhai os Lírios do Campo (2011), by Erico Veríssimo, through which the configurations and semantics of the characters “Eugênio” and “Olívia” are analyzed, which reflects how the narrative can be understood and analyzed from these two perspectives. In addition, a dialogue is constructed between literature and psychoanalysis, which mobilizes the discourse of the characters, being thought of not only as an expressive value, but as modalities of their existence. In view of this, the theoretical-methodological approach of an analytical nature is inserted into the qualitative and bibliographical aspect, using theorists such as Landowski (2002) and Freud (1999), which configures an analysis of how art alters the condition of man in the world.
