The Handbook of comfort for the anguished and sick is a translation of the Handbook of consolations: for the fears and trials that oppress us in the struggle with death [1877], originally published in 1611 by German theologian Johann Gerhard. We believe that bringing into question the Lutheran instructions to the sick and dying leads us to intimately know the experiences of the believers. We search to comprehend how much the Handbook reveals the fears and ways of facing death in the XVII century, from the Lutheran perspective. From a conceptual and theoretical point of view, our article is supported by the relationship between the history of religions and the history of reading, using the academic studies of death and dying as the basis.
