A CENSURA NA IMPRENSA DO MARANHÃO

Résumé

RESUMO: A relação da imprensa maranhense com o poder foi pontuada de conflitos. Alguns comprometedores. Outros alcançaram conseqüências lamentáveis. Houve espancamentos, perseguições e assassinatos de jornalistas. A censura se constituiu num ato perverso. Reinventava-se de acordo com a criatividade e o autoritarismo de quem estivesse à frente do governo. O admirável em tudo isso foi o espírito de luta. A coragem e o
desprendimento daqueles que tinham crença na liberdade de expressão. Nada temiam. Os séculos XIX e XX foram marcados pelas peculiaridades distintas da censura. Mas o jornalista maranhense soube reagir.

ABSTRACT: The relationship between the press of Maranhão and the dominant power was punctuated with conflicts. Some reached deplorable consequences. There were violent attacks against journalists, resulting even murders. Censorship was built in a perverse act. It was reinvented according to the creativity and demand by whomever was ahead of the government. The fight was the most admirable act and the courage of those who believed in the freedom of expression. Nothing feared them. The XIX and XX century were marked by their different peculiarities in censorship. However, the maranhense journalist did know how to react.
