Abstract

Our research aimed to understand how games were portrayed in book XVIII of the work Etimologias, written by Bishop Isidore of Seville between the years 615 and 630 AD. Several forms of activities associated with games were classified by Isidoro as having a warlike or playful character. We observed a fear in relation to games in the Roman context and a disapproval of the shows, allegedly due to pagan elements and violence. However, we note that the critical tone adopted by the bishop took into account that such practices could be good or bad according to their purpose.
