Abstract

This article focuses on the direction that, in Portugal, has been given to the continuous teacher training. In the letter of the law, teaching performance stands out as its privileged object, an option compatible with the principles of the global reform of school education, which the country has welcomed. A survey of the available supply, with the main training entity, confirms this. Questioning the prevalence of the concept of teaching performance and the teaching practices it triggers, the need to assert the concept of teaching action to guide training is affirmed. In fact, action, being informed, critical and deliberate, is the best expression of professional autonomy.
