Abstract

Literacy practices in recent years have been discussed both in the training of students and teachers and this work has the following purposes: (i) to discuss the concept of literacy and its contributions in the social and educational contexts of students and teachers; (ii) to highlight the relevance of initial and continuing education for basic education; (iii) to reflect on how the challenges and perspectives place the Portuguese language teacher on the pedagogical couch at school and, finally, (iv) to point out the importance of policies to value teaching. In this sense, these reflections constitute a literature review, making the process of literacy and teacher education visible on the couch of classroom practice. Thus, the purposes of this work aim to contribute to the prominent place of the Portuguese language teacher and his role in education.
