Proposal of a matrix for categorizing the content of academic studies on Artificial Intelligence in the field of Education

Abstract

With the emergence of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, publicly available since late 2022, and considering their cultural impact, a significant increase is expected in the number of dissertations and theses defended in fields with little tradition in AI research, such as Education. Anticipating this growth, this bibliometric study proposes a categorization matrix to classify such research. The matrix was built based on all dissertations and theses on the subject available in the Catalog of Theses and Dissertations of the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (Capes, in the Portuguese acronym) throughout the 21st century (from 2015, when the first occurrence in the field of Education took place, until 2023). The works were grouped into six categories, with the following standing out: research about pedagogical practices applied to students (43.2%), bibliographic studies (29.7%), and research about teacher training (13.5%). These results can support further studies based on literature review, besides paving the way for future comparative studies, but they also raise important epistemological questions.
